Anand Viresh Kamdar

Anand Viresh Kamdar

Visual Artist | Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

Born in Mumbai in 1988 and based in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, the artist is a multidisciplinary practitioner working across abstract expressionism, graphic design, typography, lettering and calligraphy. His practice is informed by an enduring interest in human emotions, spontaneous gestures and the expressive potential of visual form.

He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art, Mumbai, specialising in typography, lettering and calligraphy. His interdisciplinary approach brings together fine art and design, extending from expressive painting to type design and visual communication.

His abstract paintings primarily employ bold black-and-white gestures, using acrylic, oil, ink and mixed media on canvas and paper. Through spontaneous strokes, contrasting forms and dynamic compositions, he explores instinct, movement and the shifting nature of human emotion. Working with minimal colour, he treats limitation as an opportunity for greater expression, allowing the physical energy of each mark to remain central to the viewing experience.

Alongside his studio practice, he has developed an extensive career in art and design education. He has taught at institutions including ITM Institute of Design and Media, Vishwakarma University and Silica Design Institute, mentoring students in typography, graphic design and preparation for art and design entrance examinations. He also conducts workshops in calligraphy, lettering, Indian scripts, doodle art and mixed-media techniques.

His work has featured in exhibitions and art fairs in India and internationally, including Art Expo New York, the IFFS Singapore Art Fair, Kalaa Spandan Art Fair and group exhibitions at Cymroza Art Gallery and other venues. He participated in the India Conference at Harvard 2026 open call, The India We Imagine: Echoes of the Forgotten. His distinctions include a Certificate of Excellence from Pollen Art and recognition as Guest of Honour at the solo exhibition Chitra Latika.

Through his combined engagement with contemporary painting, visual communication and education, he continues to explore the relationship between artistic instinct, material and the everyday emotional experience.
