Dr. Kaumudi Prajapati

Born in Mumbai in October 1973 and currently based in Chandigarh, this contemporary artist and printmaker has developed a distinguished practice that combines artistic exploration, academic research, and a deep engagement with the history of printmaking in India. Trained in Painting at the Goa College of Art and later specializing in Printmaking with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, the artist has consistently pursued both creative and scholarly excellence.

Further strengthening her academic credentials, she qualified the UGC-NET for Lectureship and earned a Ph.D. from Panjab University, Chandigarh. Her artistic journey has been supported by several prestigious fellowships and scholarships, including a Fellowship in Painting from Goa University, a Graphics Scholarship from the Kanoria Centre for Arts, Ahmedabad, and a National Scholarship in Graphics from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

Working across printmaking and mixed visual media, her practice reflects a keen interest in process, texture, memory, and the evolving language of contemporary art. Alongside studio practice, she has contributed significantly to art scholarship, undertaking research on the history, techniques, and development of printmaking in India. Her published writings, including studies on Indian printmaking traditions and artists, have added valuable perspectives to the field.

Over the years, she has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions and has received recognition from leading cultural institutions, including honours from the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi for her contribution to visual arts. Her work demonstrates a thoughtful balance between technical mastery and conceptual inquiry, drawing from both traditional printmaking processes and contemporary visual concerns. Through her artistic and academic pursuits, she continues to contribute meaningfully to the discourse of Indian contemporary art while nurturing a deeper understanding of printmaking as a significant visual language.
