Lakshman Suryabhan Chavan

Born in 1981 in Pimpalgaon (Ghat), Beed district, Maharashtra, this accomplished contemporary artist has carved a distinctive place in Indian art through perseverance, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to creative expression. Raised in a labouring family, he became the first member of his family to pursue higher education and earn formal qualifications in Fine Arts, transforming a passion for drawing into a lifelong artistic journey.

Academically trained in drawing, painting, art education, and sculpture, his practice reflects a strong foundation in traditional Indian aesthetics while embracing a contemporary visual language. Deeply inspired by the frescoes of Ajanta, the sculptural grandeur of Khajuraho, and the principles of classical Indian art, he creates works that explore human identity, spirituality, inner consciousness, and emotional experience through expressive faces and abstract portraiture.

His paintings inhabit a space between representation and abstraction, where human forms emerge as metaphors for contemplation, empathy, resilience, and self-realisation. Calm yet powerful faces, rhythmic lines, earthy colour palettes, and layered textures form the hallmark of his visual vocabulary. The recurring themes of silence, self-awareness, and emotional transformation invite viewers into a reflective dialogue with the self.

Over the course of his career, he has presented numerous solo exhibitions at leading galleries in Mumbai, Pune, New Delhi, and other cultural centres, while also participating in significant national and international group exhibitions, art camps, workshops, and festivals. His artistic achievements have been recognised through prestigious awards, scholarships, fellowships, and honours from major art institutions, including the Maharashtra State Award, the Bombay Art Society, and national-level fellowships supporting artistic practice.

Currently based in Maharashtra, he continues to develop a deeply personal body of work rooted in Indian artistic traditions yet relevant to contemporary concerns.
