Mainaz Bano

Painter I Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India

Mainaz Bano (b. 1987, Lucknow) is a visual artist trained at the Government College of Arts & Crafts, University of Lucknow, where she completed her BFA in 2009 and MFA in 2011. Rooted in the cultural ethos of Awadh, her practice draws deeply from history, memory and lived experience, reimagining historical events and personalities through a contemporary lens.

Influenced by the Indian miniature painting tradition, Mainaz adapts its meticulous marking methods and ornamental detail while expanding its scope with modern narratives and materials. Her paintings evoke the grandeur of the past—reflected in costumes, architecture and expressions—yet remain firmly grounded in the present. Elements such as mirrors, gem-encrusted hookahs and symbolic objects act as bridges between eras. She often incorporates silver foil, cloth and paper, and recurring motifs inspired by zaris, paisleys, flowers, birds and fish, drawn from personal memories and cultural heritage.

Colour plays a central role in her work: whites of peace, pinks of love, and vibrant oranges, greens and purples infuse her canvases with luminosity and joy. While history fascinates her, the essence of her work lies in celebrating life, harmony and emotional richness.

Mainaz Bano has received several honours, including State and National scholarships and awards from the Lalit Kala Akademi, the State Award (2012), and the All India Aranya Best Painting Award (2013). Her work has been exhibited widely across India and internationally, including the Beijing International Art Biennale (2012), India Art Fair, Jehangir Art Gallery, and solo exhibitions at Apparao Galleries, Delhi and Chennai.
