Satwant Sumail

Contemporary Artist | Chandigarh, India

Born in 1959, this distinguished Indian painter has devoted over five decades to exploring the profound relationship between nature, spirituality, and human consciousness through art. Trained in Draughtsmanship (1976–79), he later completed a Five-year Diploma in Painting (Chitravishard) in 2001 and an M.A. in Painting (Bhaskar) in 2003 from Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh.

His artistic journey began with sketches of people and natural forms, gradually evolving into a deeply personal visual language rooted in contemplation and spiritual inquiry. Trees, mountains, rivers, and atmospheric landscapes emerge as recurring metaphors, reflecting themes of harmony, transformation, and inner awakening. Series such as Towards Salvation, The Flight, Symphony of Nature, Serenity, and Journey of Nature Within exemplify his enduring engagement with the meditative essence of nature.

A recipient of numerous national and state-level honours, he has been recognized by prestigious institutions including the Indian Academy of Fine Arts (IAFA), All India Fine Arts & Crafts Society (AIFACS), Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi, and the renowned Avantika Art Exhibitions at Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. His work has been presented in 16 solo exhibitions and numerous national and international group exhibitions, workshops, and artists’ camps.

His paintings form part of important public and private collections, including Lalit Kala Akademi, AIFACS, Punjab University, Punjabi University, North Zone Cultural Centre, and collections in India, the USA, Australia, and Italy. Characterized by lyrical compositions, subtle colour harmonies, and spiritual depth, his artworks invite viewers into a reflective dialogue with nature, celebrating its timeless rhythms and transformative power.
